Inspired by a helpful YouTube guide. We based this walk-through on the popular UK video "Rangemaster Range Cooker Installation Video", which covers the full installation process for a freestanding range from a well-known British manufacturer: unpacking, positioning, levelling, connecting the extraction, and making the cooker safe for commissioning. Useful viewing before your engineer arrives, so you understand what is happening on the day.
1. Measure carefully before the cooker arrives
Range cookers are wide (90 cm or 110 cm for most popular models) and deep, and they arrive on a pallet. Measure the kitchen gap, the door widths on the route in, and any tight corners in the hallway. It is worth checking the delivery route before the day - these things cannot be stood on their ends.
Check the height too. The cooker top should ideally sit level with the worktops on either side. Most ranges have feet you can adjust by 20-30 mm, but if your worktops are unusually low or the floor is uneven, you may need to do some prep work first.
2. Prepare the alcove or recess
If you are fitting the cooker into a kitchen alcove (often a former fireplace opening in East Kent properties), check the walls are clear of combustible materials. There should be at least 15 mm of clearance between the side of the cooker and any cabinet that is not rated for oven-heat.
If there is an old built-in cooker to remove first, turn off the gas at the isolation valve or the mains electric at the consumer unit before disconnecting anything. Leave the disconnection itself to a Gas Safe engineer or qualified electrician.
3. Check the supply before the cooker goes in
For a dual-fuel range (gas hob, electric ovens), you need both a gas connection and a 240V mains supply. Electric-only ranges need a dedicated 45-amp circuit on 6mm cable. Confirm with your Gas Safe engineer or electrician that the existing supply is suitable for the new appliance load.
Some older properties have only a 30-amp cooker circuit, which may not be enough for a full-size electric range with multiple ovens. Better to find out before the cooker is sitting in the kitchen.
4. Slide the cooker into position
Most ranges sit on adjustable ball-and-socket feet. Once the old appliance is out and the connection tail is accessible, slide the range cooker into position from the front, leaving a gap of at least 150 mm at the back for cables and pipe connections.
Protect the floor as you slide - ranges are heavy (90 kg or more) and most kitchen floors scuff easily. Cardboard under the feet works well for short moves on hard floors.
5. Level the cooker on adjustable feet
Adjust the four feet until the top surface is level in both directions. Check with a spirit level along the top rail and across the front. A cooker that is even slightly out of level means pans rock, fat pools in corners of the hob, and oven-roasted vegetables brown unevenly.
Once level, push the cooker into its final position against the back wall, leaving the minimum clearance the manufacturer specifies (usually 50-100 mm from the back wall to the heating elements).
6. Have the engineer make the connection
Gas connection: a Gas Safe engineer will connect the gas flexible hose to the bayonet fitting or union and test for leaks with soapy water or a leak detector. They will also check the pressure and commissioning settings if it is a new installation.
Electric connection: a qualified electrician will connect the cooker tail to the mains circuit via the cooker control switch. They should issue an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate for the connection - keep this for your records.
7. Fit the extractor and test everything
With the cooker in position and connected, fit the extractor hood above it (see the separate guide on fitting a cooker hood if needed). Run each oven and hob zone briefly to confirm ignition, heating, and airflow. Check the gas flame colour - a clear blue ring with a small yellow tip at the edge is normal. A predominantly yellow or orange flame needs adjustment by the engineer.
When to call a handyman
Call Richard for the physical installation work - moving the appliance, levelling, adjusting the alcove if needed, fitting the extractor. The gas and electrical connections must be made by registered professionals. Richard can coordinate both if that helps.
Need a range cooker installed?
The Sandwich Handyman handles the physical installation work across Sandwich, Deal, Dover, and East Kent. Gas Safe and electrician connections can be coordinated on request.
