1. Confirm the problem is sludge, not air
Run the heating and feel the radiator. If the top half is hot and the bottom half is cool or cold, sludge is the most likely culprit. Air in the system produces a cold top half (the air sits above the water), not a cold bottom half.
You can confirm sludge by bleeding the radiator: if black, murky water comes out rather than clean rust-coloured or clear water, that is magnetite. Mind you - even a small amount of black bleed water is a sign the system needs treatment, whether or not the radiator itself is giving you cold spots yet.
2. Turn the heating off and let it cool
You need to work on a cold system. Turn the boiler off and wait at least an hour for the water to cool. The water in a central heating system gets very hot and can cause serious burns. Do not skip this step.
3. Isolate the radiator
Close both valves on the radiator: the TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) on one side and the lockshield valve on the other. The lockshield has a plastic cap - remove it and use an adjustable spanner to close it clockwise. Count the number of turns so you can return it to the same setting when you reconnect.
4. Drain the radiator
Put old towels and a large bowl or bucket beneath the radiator. Undo the union nut at the base of one valve (the TRV side is usually easiest) with an adjustable spanner. Water will start to flow - let it drain into your bowl. Open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator a quarter-turn to let air in and speed drainage.
The water coming out may be very dark brown or black. This is the sludge. Have enough containers ready - a single radiator can hold several litres.
5. Remove the radiator and flush it outdoors
Once drained, lift the radiator off its wall brackets. Take it outside and connect a garden hose to one of the valve ports. Let water flow through until it runs clear out of the other ports. Tilt and shake the radiator as you flush to dislodge settled sludge.
To be fair, this step is messy and physical, particularly with a large double panel radiator. A second pair of hands makes a significant difference.
6. Rehang, reconnect, and refill
Rehang the flushed radiator on its brackets. Reconnect the valves and tighten the union nuts firmly but not excessively - finger-tight plus a quarter to half turn. Return the lockshield valve to its original position. Close the bleed valve.
Repressurise the boiler if the system has lost pressure (the gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold). Open both radiator valves and let the radiator refill. Bleed it to remove any trapped air, then check all unions for drips before you leave the area.
7. Add central heating inhibitor to protect the system
Sludge forms because the water in an untreated system is mildly acidic and slowly corrodes the steel radiators and pipework. Adding a central heating inhibitor - such as Fernox F1 or Sentinel X100 - neutralises this and prevents new sludge from forming.
Add the inhibitor via the feed-and-expansion tank (on open-vented systems) or through a radiator bleed valve using a filling kit (on sealed systems). Follow the manufacturer’s dosing instructions - it is usually one bottle per system regardless of the number of radiators.
8. Consider fitting a magnetic filter
A magnetic filter fitted to the return pipe close to the boiler catches magnetite particles before they can re-enter the boiler. Once a system has been flushed and dosed with inhibitor, a filter keeps it clean indefinitely with an annual service. This is standard practice on any system with a new boiler, and sensible on any older system that has had sludge problems.
When to call a handyman
Call Richard if multiple radiators have cold spots, if the system is large, or if you are not confident removing and rehanging radiators. If the entire system is heavily sludged, a powerflush by a heating engineer is more thorough than flushing individual radiators - though it costs accordingly. Also call if you spot any dripping valves or corroded unions while you have the radiator off.
