Inspired by a helpful YouTube guide. We based this walk-through on the UK video "Sealing Tile Backer Board Joints" from the Skill Builder channel, presented by UK trade journalist Roger Bisby. Roger has been covering practical building techniques for decades and the Skill Builder channel is one of the most reliable UK-based resources for doing this kind of work properly rather than just making it look right from the front.
1. Choose the right board for the job
There are several types of tile backer board on the UK market. The two main categories are cement-fibre board (harder, heavier, and truly waterproof throughout) and foam-core board with reinforced faces (lighter, easier to cut, and just as waterproof). Both work well in showers when jointed and sealed correctly.
For a standard timber stud frame, 12mm boards are the usual choice. For a floor substrate under tiles, look for specific floor-grade backer boards rated for the loads involved. Don't use wall boards on floors — they're not designed for it.
2. Prepare the stud frame or existing surface
Boards need a solid surface to fix to. For a timber stud frame, studs should be at 400mm or 600mm centres to coincide with board edges. If the existing framing doesn't line up well, add noggings between the studs where board joints will fall — every joint needs a fixing point behind it.
If you're fixing onto an existing solid wall, the surface needs to be flat, dry, and structurally sound. Remove any loose plaster or tiles. Prime with an appropriate bonding agent if the surface is dusty or absorbent.
3. Cut the boards to size
Cement-fibre boards can be scored and snapped using a scoring tool and a straight edge — similar to cutting plasterboard, but harder work. A jigsaw with a carbide-tipped blade cuts more accurately but generates a significant amount of dust. Work outside or mask off the room.
Foam-core boards cut much more easily with a standard utility knife and a straight edge. Score the face, snap, then score the back. Leave a gap of around 2–3mm between boards at the joints — this is by design and gets filled with the tape and compound later.
4. Fix the boards to the frame
Use the screws specified by the board manufacturer — typically corrosion-resistant or stainless steel, at the correct length to go through the board and into the stud without going too deep. Space screws at around 200mm centres along the studs and 150mm around the perimeter.
Drive screws until the head is just below the surface of the board — flush or slightly recessed. Don't overtighten or you'll damage the facing and reduce the holding strength. Every screw head needs sealing later, so take your time getting the depth right.
5. Tape all joints with alkaline-resistant mesh tape
Standard fibreglass mesh tape is not suitable here — it degrades in alkaline environments over time. Use the alkali-resistant mesh tape specified for use with tile backer boards. Press it firmly over each joint, including internal corners, external corners, and the joints where the board meets the shower tray or floor.
The tape holds the tanking compound in place and bridges any small movement at the joints. Don't skip it, even on butt joints that look solid.
6. Apply waterproof tanking compound over all joints and fixings
This is the step most people underestimate — and the one that matters most. Apply the tanking compound (often called a liquid waterproofing membrane, tanking slurry, or wet area waterproofer) over every joint, every screw head, and every perimeter edge where the board meets another surface.
Apply a first coat with a brush, pressing it well into the mesh tape. Allow to cure per the manufacturer's instructions, then apply a second coat at 90 degrees to the first. The tape and two coats of compound are what stop water migrating through the joints and reaching the timber behind.
7. Allow to cure fully before tiling
Don't tile over compound that isn't fully cured. Most products need 24 hours minimum; some specify longer. In cold conditions or poor ventilation, allow extra time. The compound should be hard and slightly flexible when cured — not tacky or soft in the middle.
Once it's ready, the boards are a first-rate substrate for any standard tile adhesive. No additional priming is needed for most products, though check the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. You've done the hard bit — the tiling itself is now much more forgiving.
When to call a handyman
Call Richard if the stud frame itself needs building or replacing, if there's existing water damage to deal with before boarding, or if the shower installation is part of a wider bathroom fit-out. Getting the boarding right at the start saves a lot of grief further down the line — it's the kind of job where a second pair of hands makes a real difference.
